Wood is a natural material, which means wooden doors can respond to changes in temperature and humidity. This is especially important for exterior entrance doors installed in coastal, tropical, very dry or cold climates.
Understanding how climate affects a wooden door can help you choose the right materials, construction and finishing system before production.
Wood naturally absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air. When humidity changes significantly, the moisture content of the wood can also change.
In a humid environment, wood may absorb more moisture and expand. In a dry environment, it can lose moisture and shrink. If these changes are not properly considered during door design and manufacturing, problems such as gaps, cracks, sticking or warping may occur.
This does not mean that wooden doors cannot be used in challenging climates. It means the door needs to be designed for its intended environment.
For homes near the ocean or in tropical regions, high humidity, salt air and strong sunlight can create additional challenges for exterior wooden doors.
A suitable door may require careful wood selection, moisture control during production, stable internal construction and an appropriate exterior-grade finishing system.
The door should also be protected from direct rain and excessive sunlight whenever possible. A porch, canopy or sufficient overhang can help reduce the amount of weather exposure.
Very dry climates create a different type of challenge. When the surrounding air has low humidity, wood can lose moisture and shrink.
For projects in hot and dry regions, the manufacturer should consider the local climate when selecting the wood, construction method and finishing system.
Large entrance doors require particular attention because their greater surface area can make dimensional movement more noticeable.
Doors installed in cold regions may experience significant temperature differences between the interior and exterior.
If a project has extremely low temperatures or large seasonal changes, the door construction should be designed accordingly. The choice of materials, internal structure, sealing and finishing can all affect long-term performance.
For oversized doors, these considerations become even more important.
Before ordering a custom wooden door, it is useful to provide information about the installation environment, including:
These details allow the manufacturer to evaluate the project more accurately instead of treating every wooden door as the same product.
There is no single wooden door construction that is ideal for every climate.
A door designed for a dry European interior environment may have different requirements from an exterior entrance door installed beside the sea or in a region with extreme temperature changes.
For this reason, climate should be considered at the beginning of the project—not after the door has already been manufactured.
